So How About That Jhonas Enroth Guy…

Ryan Miller’s been a busy goaltender during the Sabres’ playoff push. He’s started in eight straight games and has been the starter in 18 of Buffalo’s last 20 games. This of course means that Jhonas Enroth hasn’t gotten much work. Enroth’s last start was on March 8th on the road against the Bruins.

With Miller playing at an extremely high level, it’s clear that he should be used as much as possible as the Sabres try to climb from the basement of the Eastern Conference into a playoff spot. At the same time, it might be prudent to give Enroth at least one more start to help keep Miller fresh and in elite-form. So what is the most viable solution? Well for starters, let’s take a look at Buffalo’s remaining schedule:

Mar. 27th

@ Washington

7:00 p.m.

Mar. 30th

vs. Pittsburgh

7:30 p.m.

Mar. 31st

@ Toronto

7:00 p.m.

Apr. 3rd

vs. Toronto

7:00 p.m.

Apr. 5th

@ Philadelphia

7:00 p.m.

Apr. 7th

@ Boston

3:00 p.m.

Obviously, Miller will be in goal for the Washington game today. When I’d start Enroth all depends on the outcome of Tuesday’s game.

If Buffalo were to win in regulation, then I’d put Enroth in for the game against Pittsburgh and then ride Miller the rest of the way. A regulation win tomorrow would give the Sabres a two point edge over the Capitals with five games to play. Having that small lead gives you another option. The Penguins are playing out of their minds. Buffalo’s odds of winning that game are small, regardless of who’s in goal in my opinion. Spell Miller and make sure he’s fresh for the remaining games.

However, if the Sabres lose in regulation or OT, then I think you have to go with Miller for the rest of the games. Since Washington has such a commanding lead in the first tie-breaker (Regulation+OT wins), any kind of loss essentially puts the Sabres two or three points back. Also, Ottawa beat Winnipeg in regulation last night, increasing their lead to four points. At that point, Buffalo cannot afford to give Miller any rest because another slip-up would most likely mean the end of their playoff hopes. You’ve got to keep him in there and pray that he doesn’t hit a wall.

This isn’t very likely, but if by some chance Buffalo finds themselves locked into a playoff spot before the season ends, I’d give Enroth the remaining game(s). No sense in wasting any gas in Miller’s tank.

  1. Miller will play until there are no more games to play. It’s why he makes the big bucks.
